African Wild Dogs: Painted Predators of the Savanna
Fri, Jul 10, 2020 1:00 PM MDT/3:00 PM EDT
Wild dogs are Africa’s most efficient and successful predator. Working as a pack, they can run down prey much larger than themselves, and their cooperative hunts end in a meal more often than any other predator. So, if they are such successful hunters, why are they endangered and absent from half the countries where they once roamed? Their numbers have declined from hundreds of thousands to approximately 5,000 today due to conflict with humans, habitat destruction and disease. South African Expedition Leader Matt Meyer takes us into the world of the African wild dog—also called the painted hunting dog—to learn about these fascinating animals, exploring the ecology, behavior and conservation of these charismatic and threatened predators.
