In this webinar series, Annie Van Dinther interviews Expedition Leaders from around the world to discover the heart of the places they love and call home. Our quest is to take you on a journey with our guides, via stories and photographs, that leaves you feeling like you’ve been there. This time, though, we're turning the tables, as Corbin Hawkins interviews Annie, our Guide Development Director, about her passion for her home state of Alaska. To live in Alaska is to be defined by "extremes, connections and wildlife," says Annie. Since 2004, she has lived in the small town of Homer near the bottom of the Kenai Peninsula. For most rural Alaskans, having a connection to the land is an essential means of surviving the long, dark winters and the high cost of living in such a remote place. Gathering berries becomes a sacred task. Fishing lies at the heart of being an Alaskan, whether you are a human or a bear. Annie's neighbors are bears, moose and sandhill cranes—and whales, otters and seals in Kachemak Bay. Hear from Annie about the rhythms of daily life and the seasons as she shares her heart for Alaska.
