East Greenland: A Photographic Odyssey in a Changing World

Fri, Sep 18, 2020 1:00 PM MT / 3:00 PM ET

Greenland is ground zero for global climate change. In August, scientists announced that the Greenland ice sheet has passed the point of no return: even if climate change were to stop today, it would continue shrinking. Greenland's rapidly melting glaciers create stunning icescapes that provide riveting subjects for photographers including Ralph Lee Hopkins, our presenter for this webinar. Ralph is the founder and director of the expedition photography program for the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic alliance. We’ll join Ralph on a visual journey to Sermilik Fjord, carved into the east side of the world’s largest island. This remote arm of water is a photographer’s dream, providing access to the Greenland ice sheet with its mighty glaciers, giant sculpted icebergs, and dark skies for viewing the northern lights. Getting here involves exciting modes of transport, from small planes and helicopters to inflatable boats and kayaks. Along the way, we meet Greenlandic Inuit villagers in the isolated towns of Kulusuk, Tasiilaq and the tiny village of Tinit. Join Ralph on an epic journey to Nat Hab’s Base Camp Greenland, where Arctic photography opportunities have no peer on the planet.
