LIVE  at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT

Follow the captivating conservation story of bald-headed uakaris—fascinating but vulnerable primates found only in the Amazon rain forest—in this virtual seminar led by biologist Felipe Ennes Silva, a research fellow at Mamiraua Institute of Sustainable Development. This Brazil-based institute provides scientific support to local communities to promote sustainable management of two protected natural areas that collectively cover more than 3 million hectares of habitat for uakari monkeys and other wildlife. Felipe and Expedition Leader Helder Brandao de Oliveira will present an integrative taxonomic proposal based on their review of new genomic analyses and field evidence related to the evolution, genetic diversity, and geographic distribution of bald uakaris. These Brazilian biology experts will share an overview of the main threats facing bald uakaris in the wild and the current conservation strategies to support the species’ long-term survival, including the essential role of protected natural areas as havens for wildlife. You will also hear some success stories from sustainably managed nature reserves in the Amazon rainforest and get updates on the latest research about the intriguing ecology of this essential ecosystem.
