Migratory Species: Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

Wed, Jul 28, 2021
LIVE  at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT

Some of the world’s greatest natural wonders involve the movement of wild species, from East Africa’s Great Migration to monarch butterflies flying from the U.S to Mexico to gray whales’ 6,000-mile voyage between Alaska and Baja. The ability to successfully navigate the natural environment is essential for all species, including our own. Discover some of the many complex mechanisms that different migratory species use to traverse the globe, along with some that we still don't fully understand. Whether it's through independent decisions, inherited instincts, preprogrammed mental maps, sensory adaptation, magnetic fields or celestial navigation, you’ll gain a better sense of how both individual creatures and entire species orient themselves within the world. Expedition Leader Kristina Disney will tell the story of a bison herd that was relocated near her childhood residence at Grasslands National Park, then spent the next seven years trying to return to their prairie home. Kristina will also give an overview of how humans have evolved while developing our own wayfinding skills, with methods ranging from the astrolabe to the compass to the GPS-equipped smartphones in our pockets. Finally, you’ll learn about how humankind is disrupting some animals’ age-old navigational cues, and what we can all do to help ensure that future generations are able to continue their magnificent migrations.
