Biodiversity: How It Helps Create the World’s Most Special Places

Discover why biodiversity is so important to humans, animals and the Earth, how and why it is diminishing, and which places are considered the "most biodiverse.” Biodiversity refers to the enormous variety of life, both individual lifeforms and the interactions among them. Expedition Leader Eleanor Edye, a former biologist with the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, examines the concept of "hotspots"—special places where the biodiversity index is higher than anywhere else on Earth. Using the Charlevoix Biosphere Reserve, which we visit on Nat Hab’s Whales & Nature Trails of Quebec trip, as one example, Eleanor explores the range of biodiversity contained within this UN-designated site of global significance and explains why preserving it is critically important for so many species—including our own. From its gorges and glacial valleys to the St. Lawrence River estuary and Saguenay Fjord, this dramatic region is home to whales, woodland caribou, black bear, red fox and more, which make their home in ancient boreal forests, along wild rivers and lakes, and in the sea. Learn how assessing biodiversity helps scientists better understand ecosystem health and support the recovery of threatened species, especially apex predators. And get an inside look at other global examples of important biodiversity initiatives underway.
