Winnie-the-Pooh has been inspiring children of all ages since Christmas Eve in 1925, when he appeared in a story by author A.A. Milne in the London Evening News. In much the same way that the image of Pooh has changed over the generations, so too has our relationship with the teddy bear’s real-life counterpart, Urus americanus, the American black bear. Join Nat Hab Expedition Leader Kristina Disney (who still has the Pooh Bear backpack she received when she was six) to learn the story of Winnie-the-Pooh and the bear for which he was named. You’ll come away with a better understanding of conservation efforts over the century and how they have changed our relationship with the wild black bear. Discuss what “wild” really means—you may be surprised to learn that wilderness as we know it is a completely western cultural concept—and discover how our perception of wildness continues to grow and shift, hopefully always in a positive direction.
