If you’re as fascinated by polar bears as we are, you’ll want to join Nat Hab Expedition Leader and long-time bear guide Eddy Savage for this in-depth look at the bears of Western Hudson Bay. In particular, Eddy will explore the distinctive denning habits of these majestic mammals, who gather each fall in enormous numbers to wait for the ice to form and their seal-hunting season to begin. While most polar bears around the world build their dens in snowbanks that melt seasonally, the bears of the Hudson Bay dig their dens deep in peat mounds in the permafrost of the tundra. This means that instead of having to rebuild their dens each year, they have a stable living area that can withstand not just decades of use, but centuries! Smart architectural choice, right? These dens, which sometimes have several chambers, also serve as cooling retreats for overheated bears during the summer. After learning about these special bears, join us to see them firsthand on our Premier Polar Bear Adventure to Churchill, Canada, and the Hudson Bay. Guided by expert naturalists like Eddy, our small-group adventures get you as close as possible to polar bears in comfort and safety.
