Earth is undoubtedly the domain of the insect; these flying, buzzing, creeping, crawling creatures make up an estimated three-quarters of all living species. But few people realize the immense importance of insects to the world’s well-being. The first installment of this webinar series, hosted by Expedition Leader Lorraine Doyle, focuses on the extraordinary diversity of insects in Southern Africa, where more than 50,000 insect species have been named. Yet, scientists believe this represents less than half of the actual number still to be discovered and described. Learn insects’ secrets to success and some of their remarkable adaptations, and hear about disturbing recent studies that report alarming declines in insect populations worldwide. Without rapid intervention to slow or reverse these losses, the environmental consequences could be catastrophic. We owe it not only to the insects, but to the planet, to better understand their role and how we can protect them and their environment.
