Meet Four Special South Asian Primates

Tue, Feb 7, 2023
LIVE  at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT

What do hoolock gibbons, gray langurs, Bornean orangutans and toque macaques have in common? They’re all primates, and they’re all beloved by Expedition Leaders Arpita Dutta and Payal Mehta! In this webinar, Arpita and Payal discuss each animal’s distinctive natural history, their characteristic behaviors, the conservation threats they face, and—most excitingly—where they’ve been sighted in the field on Nat Hab trips. Learn, too, how these creatures are perceived by the local people who share the forests with them. Some populations have mythical stories, beliefs and taboos attached to the animals, which have changed the course of their lives throughout history. Smitten with your new primate friends? Arpita and Payal detail where you can see them in the wild, from toque macaques and gray langurs at the 12th-century ruins of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, to hoolock gibbons in northeast India, to the orangutans that inhabit some of the world’s oldest rain forests in Borneo.
