LIVE at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT
Beluga whales are some of the world’s most charismatic marine mammals. Highly social, they migrate and feed in huge pods, including an annual summer gathering of more than 3,000 at the mouth of the Churchill River in Manitoba, Canada, the site of Nat Hab’s Belugas, Bears & Summer Wildlife of Churchill trip. Dive into the biology and ecology of belugas with Expedition Leader and biologist Eleanor Edye as she details their many unique characteristics and behaviors, including the astounding repertoire of sounds that have earned these vocal whales the nickname “canaries of the sea.” Learn about their evolutionary journey and the specific adaptations that allow them to survive in frigid northern waters. Find out how belugas rely on sea ice and other changing elements of the fragile Arctic ecosystem, and why they migrate to more southerly estuaries during the warmer months. Eleanor will also describe the conservation challenges and opportunities belugas face, with a special focus on the Western Hudson Bay population near Churchill.
