LIVE at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT

Presented by Melissa Silva

You’re likely familiar with the axolotl’s adorable visage. But did you know that this tiny salamander was once considered a god in Aztec mythology, or that nowadays it is the subject of scientific research due to its ability to regenerate its limbs -- and even its heart and brain? Mexico Expedition Leader and marine biologist Melissa Silva lives in Mexico City, where she has first-hand experience observing axolotls, which are endemic to the lakes and canals of Xochimilco. She shares the natural history of the species: its biology, its cultural and ecological importance, the threats it faces, and what’s being done to protect it.
