December 24, 2025
LIVE at 3:00 PM ET / 2:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM MT / 12:00 PM PT

Presented by Melissa Silva

From festive poinsettias to boughs of holly to tinsel-covered evergreen trees, many of the plants we associate with the winter holidays carry rich natural and cultural histories. Expedition Leader Melissa Silva explains the Mexican origins of the poinsettia—known locally as flor de Nochebuena (Christmas Eve flower)—and how this crimson flower became a global symbol of the season. She also discusses firs, pines, mistletoe and holly, revealing how botany, ecology and tradition intertwine in winter celebrations across cultures.
